I've Got the Sittin' on a Good Book Blues

It's not so bad, I guess. It's hard, but it's not physical torture.

Yet.

I'm talking about holding off on publishing it's a book that's finished. Like... FINISHED. Written, revised, edited, polished, proof-read, finished. All we're waiting on now is cover art, and Resurrection will be ready to roll.

...But I'm not releasing it for another two months.

WHY, TANITH, WHYYYYY?!

I know. Believe me. Based on the feedback I'm getting from enthusiastic early readers, I want this thing out yesterday. But here's the thing: for a series to get a good start in this cold, cruel publishing world, the current recommendation is to release a few books together to gain momentum and keep readers happy. The theory is that y'all are rabid wolverines or something, and will tear us authors apart if we don't deliver the next book pronto.

Or worse, you'll forget about our gorgeous books and characters and not bother to read the next book when we do get around to delivering it to you.

THE HORROR. I know.

Now, the recommendation I've seen floating around most recently is to have books 1-3 out within a few weeks of each other.

Weeks. Not years like in traditional publishing. Not three books in under a year, which I thought was impressive back in 2014 when I started doing this writing thing professionally.

Weeeeeeeks.

That just ain't gonna happen. It takes me a minimum of three to four months to write, revise, etc. a barely-a-novel-length book, and this series is going to end up with some damn solid novels in it. I'm overlapping production to allow me more R&R time with each (rest & rumination to get that slow-roasted flavour I as a reader prefer). So while quarterly releases might be possible if I pushed myself... well, I'm not the Flash here. Quality takes time for me.

But what I can do, hard as it is, is stockpile a bit. Resurrection is ready. Sanctuary is with my editor, and I anticipate being able to release it either August 1 or 7... so I'm holding Resurrection until June 27 to place them about a month apart.

A lifetime, apparently, in this crowded, cutthroat wild west of publishing, but it's what I can do. I want to offer Resurrection as a gift to my country for Canada Day, but I won't rush Sanctuary and let the quality falter.

So I sit. And I wait.

It's so hard.
